The Juno snow storm might not have been the intense blizzard in New York City that everyone anticipated, but it did dust the Asphalt Green field with enough snow to hold our Snowman Showdown family-friendly event. On January 28, we invited the community to come spend a few hours playing on our snow-filled field on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

Approximately 250 people showed up, including families with kids ranging from 2 to 12 years old. Attendees had a great time making snow angels, building snowmen, playing soccer and football in the snow, and drinking hot chocolate. We even had a special guest, New York City Council Member Ben Kallos, who stopped by to join in the excitement. To up the ante, we also ran a snowman building contest. Asphalt Green staff selected the winner based on the most creativity. The winner was Max Leppo and his father Michael, who created “Snowie and the Snow Family,” which included a total of four snow people.

Snowman Showdown brings joy to hundreds of children with something as simple as a clean and safe place to be active with friends,” says Erica Lopez, Development Associate, Campaigns and Events at Asphalt Green. “Free events like Snowman Showdown give Asphalt Green the chance to connect directly with the community we serve.”
