Name: Isabelle Greenberg

Job Title: Lifeguard

Asphalt Green Department: Aquatics

Asphalt Green Campus: Battery Park City

Q: How long have you been working at Asphalt Green?

A: I started working at the beginning of summer 2014, so I’ve been working here for about a year and a half.

Q: What do you do at Asphalt Green?

A: I am a lifeguard, and I have various responsibilities, however, the key is safety. Lifeguards ensure the safety of those around them by watching the pool, monitoring the conditions, and responding to emergencies. We prevent problems, and are first responders when needed. We also keep the deck tidy and clean and engage with customers as best possible.

Q: What is your favorite aspect of working at Asphalt Green?

A: I love being able to grow my relationship with both the members and the lifeguards I work with. I have made new friends and had the opportunity to meet interesting people. The members are a large part of what makes Asphalt Green great, so being able to get to know and help them is really awesome.

Q: What is one of your fondest memories of working at Asphalt Green so far?

A: One of my favorite moments on deck is when our instructors ask their classes to point out the lifeguard. It makes me feel accomplished, and it acknowledges that lifeguards are vital around the water. They recognize what I am there to do and look up to me knowing that I am here to help them. Being one of the younger members of the Asphalt Green lifeguard team, I was a little intimidated at first. The acknowledgement from kids makes me feel welcome. They help me be the best that I can every day.

Q: How did you get into the aquatics industry?

A: I began swimming on a team when I was 8 years old, and I’ve been swimming ever since. I still swim competitively. As soon as I could, I took a lifeguard certification course at Asphalt Green’s Battery Park City campus, and then joined the lifeguard crew soon after.

Q: Who inspires you?

A: My parents inspire me. They work so hard at whatever they are doing, whether it’s just chores or important business. My mother’s determination and my father’s flexibility serve as great role models for me, and I hope I will be just as amazing as them.

Q: Do you play any other sports?

A: I have tried a lot of other sports, but swimming is the only one that stuck with me throughout the years. It lets me put together my thoughts and gives me a peaceful feeling. It’s always resonated with me. I guess without swimming, I am just a fish out of water!

Q: Who is your favorite athlete?

A: Missy Franklin is my favorite athlete for a couple reasons. First, her youth and accomplishments are amazing; she has set so many records at a very young age. Second, she contributes to many charities, and it shows she is very kind.

Q: What is the best swim tip you’ve received or favorite tip to share with players?

A: Practice really does make perfect. Some people may be born with talent, but this means nothing if you don’t develop it and do your best every day. Give 100 percent, and your performance will reflect it!

Q: What is your favorite quote?

A: Tina Fey: “Whatever the problem, be part of the solution. Don’t just sit around raising questions and pointing out obstacles”.

Q: What is a fun fact about Isabelle?

A: I am learning programming and database design, and right now I am an intern at the Museum of Natural History. I know it’s nerdy, but it’s part of me that I love!
