Lifeguards

We are looking for part time Lifeguards to staff our two pools (50-meter and therapeutic exercise). Lifeguards are responsible for the safety and well-being of all swimmers, ensuring that they adhere to pool policies including circle swim. Lifeguards also configure the pool as required and maintain equipment.

Qualified candidates will be professional and reliable with strong customer service skills to meet the needs of our demanding clientele. The following certifications are required: ARC Lifeguard Training, Standard First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. NYC Parks and other certifications required to upgrade to American Red Cross.

We have multiple shifts available for the Spring semester.

Lifeguard Training

The Aquatics Department is pleased to announce a new program designed to allow individuals to earn their lifeguard certification, qualify for a job and make a difference!

Do you know anyone who might be interested? Must be 15 years by April 22nd, with a love of water and a desire to ensure the safety of swimmers from the community. The course is intended for those interested in working as a lifeguard. Participants will earn their American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification and will have the chance to become a member of the Asphalt Green Aquatics Department. Training for prospective lifeguards will be conducted by our own staff. Following the successful completion of the training course, qualified candidates will be considered for employment here.

The fee for the program is $400.00 however scholarships are available for participants from our public school and community partners. If you know someone who is or will be 15 years of age by the above date, please let them know about this unique opportunity to learn, earn, serve and get a job.

Summer Day Camp Jobs

Asphalt Green is a non-profit sports center located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. We run a day camp for children ranging in ages from 4 to 12. Campers participate in a variety of activities including swimming, soccer, basketball, baseball, martial arts, yoga, gymnastics and arts & crafts, etc. Camp starts on June 29th and ends August 13th. Camp staff is expected to be on the premises and ready to work by 7:50 a.m. The day is over at 4:30.

It is important to note that the day is long and requires high energy. Qualified candidates must have experience working with children in a group setting. We expect our counselors to be reliable, caring and able to give direction using positive communication. The rewards include a competitive stipend and the opportunity to work with children in an environment that is primarily focused on movement and fitness.

NOTES:
This is a day camp with no housing options. Metro NYC area residents only, please.

Candidates must commit to the entire calendar of summer day camp—7 full weeks Monday through Friday—June 29th through August 13th. We will only hire individuals who can work the entire 7 week camp—no exceptions.

Counselors

General counselors must be 18 years of age or older, with camp and/or after school program experience. Unfortunately, babysitting or in-home child care is not sufficient.

Head Counselors must have a minimum of 2 years experience working with children in group settings. As above, unfortunately babysitting or in-home child care is not adequate preparation for this role.

All counselors must be prepared to go into the pool—again, no exceptions!

General Counselor Responsibilities:
  • Guide camper groups of 18-20 children to and from activities and on trips.
  • Closely monitor surrounding areas and all activities watching out for and correcting potentially dangerous situations.
  • Maintain safety standards for campers.
  • Develop a working knowledge of backgrounds of all assigned campers including allergies and/or physical limitations.
  • Closely supervise all aspects of the campers’ day including arrival, meal times, departures and after hours duties as assigned.
  • Quickly identify potential problems, and alert Head Counselors when appropriate. With the help of the Head Counselor, resolve problems quickly and appropriately.
  • Work closely with Activity Counselors to organize campers in each session. Participate in activities as requested by Activity Counselors.
    NOTE: All General Counselors are required to enter our pool when the children are swimming—no exceptions!
  • Participate in brief weekly staff meetings held at the end of the day.
Head Counselors Responsibilities:
  • Manage 2-3 General Counselors throughout the day ensuring that all General Counselors are focused on the campers and are engaged in their care, participating in activities and representing Asphalt Green appropriately.
  • Take attendance signing campers in and out of camp every day.
  • Act as liaison with parents passing on important information.
  • Closely monitor surrounding areas and all activities watching out for and correcting potentially dangerous situations.
  • Maintain safety standards for campers.
  • Develop a working knowledge of backgrounds of all assigned campers including allergies and/or physical limitations.
  • Actively participate or lead all group activities including swimming, arts & crafts, etc. Ensure that campers participate in activities throughout the day.
    NOTE: Extensive knowledge of sports is not a requirement however, energy and enthusiasm are essential.
  • Closely supervise all aspects of the campers’ day including arrival, meal times, departures and after hours duties as assigned.
  • Quickly identify potential problems, and work towards a solution quickly and appropriately.
  • Participate in paid weekly evening staff meetings.
  • Set a good example for all campers by being on-time, displaying respect for others and maintaining excellent sportsmanship throughout the duration of camp.
