We believe that swimming is an essential skill that every child should learn. Like riding a bike, being able to swim provides a lifetime of enjoyment through physical activity. With childhood obesity at an epidemic level, it's crucial to help children develop healthy lifestyles that include regular exercise. It's also a matter of safety. Consider these facts from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC):

Asphalt Green is committed to eliminating childhood obesity and drowning in New York City. We do this through Waterproofing, a free swim instruction and water safety program serving public school children in New York City. Since the creation of the Waterproofing program in 1994, Asphalt Green's professional instructors have taught over 30,000 public school children water safety and how to swim.

This year, we are serving close to 3,000 children from 35 schools in five locations. Waterproofing has expanded to the South Bronx where over 800 children from 6 schools will receive instruction in the newly-constructed New Settlement Community Campus. We are also proud to continue our partnerships with the Children's Aid Society's Dunlevy Milbank Center, and PS 125 where more than 1,000 children participate in the program.

Asphalt Green is a proud provider of the NYC Parks Dept. Swim for Life program. This year, we are teaching children at New Settlement and at the Riverdale Country School.

Each spring, we celebrate the success of the Waterproofing program with The Big Swim®, a free swim meet for 1,000 children and a fundraising benefit for the Waterproofing program.
