The Big Swim 2010

Get ready for the 15th Annual Big Swim on Saturday, April 24, 2010. It’s sure to be a fun-filled day for kids and adults of all ages.

The Big Swim Meet

The Big Swim is a one-of-a-kind open swim meet where 1,000 kids ages 6-16 participate in a FREE day of competitive swim races. Each child experiences the excitement of a real race with starting blocks, officials, and a timed finish—all under the close supervision of trained lifeguards and aquatic staff. Every child is a winner, taking home a medal, t-shirt, goody bag and memories of this exhilarating, unique day. Kids don’t need to be a great swimmer to enter The Big Swim. Just be able to swim from one end of the pool to the other.

Hosted by triple gold medalist Rowdy Gaines and Canadian Olympian Nikki Dryden, The Big Swim features Olympic diving exhibitions and swimming demonstrations in addition to the swim meet. We’ll also have Olympic swimmers and elite athletes attending.

Volunteer for The Big Swim

You don’t have to swim to be a part of the Big Swim! We also need volunteers to help run the event. There are three shifts: Morning (8:30am-1:30pm), Afternoon (12:30pm-5:30pm), and the “Ironman” All-Day (8:30am-5:30pm). We typically need more volunteers for the afternoon shift — to help with the younger kids — but we’ll take whatever time you have available!

Volunteers will get a free Big Swim t-shirt, a complimentary lunch, and a chance to bring a smile to a child’s face as they Swim Big! Please sign up online by April 22. If you have any questions about volunteering, you can call 212.369.8890 ext. 2242 or email Karlee Darby.

The Big Swim Benefit

On Saturday, April 24, 2010, Asphalt Green will host the 15th Annual Big Swim Benefit—The Big Swim Under the Big Top—for supporters of the Waterproofing program. The Waterproofing program is a partnership with the New York City public schools, agencies and organizations that teaches children to swim and be safe in the water. Since the program began in 1993, more than 30,000 children from low-income households participated in the program for free.

The benefit starts with a fun-filled Olympian Exhibition featuring synchronized diving, synchronized swimming, and a relay with our Olympians and Waterproofing students swimming together. After the exhibition, guests will attend a family friendly lunch in a tented space over the basketball court.

Hosted by Triple Gold Medalist Rowdy Gaines and Canadian Olympian Nikki Dryden, this 15th anniversary celebration will be the greatest show on earth!
