Kids Sports & Gymnastics – Frequently Asked Questions

Does AG offer trial classes before enrolling in a class?

Currently, we do not offer parents the option of trying our classes before enrolling. Participant numbers and instructors differ from class to class and adding a trial athlete would disrupt the class. We do invite parents to watch classes they are thinking of enrolling and are willing to have the managers and coaches speak to them about the class.

My child is advanced; how do I get them enrolled in an advanced class?

We ask that parents enroll their child in the age appropriate class without pre-requisites first. During the early weeks of the semester, should our coach deem an athlete more advanced, they will discuss more appropriate options with the program manager and parent. Our coaches are constantly evaluating our class participants and determining ways for them to improve. If promotion is recommended, this will be communicated to the parent as soon as possible.

My child is too young or too old for a particular class: can they still attend?

YSE classes are structured to accommodate a certain age range. These ages are designed to allow for participation at an appropriate level for each child’s age and ability, and follow established guidelines for the sports and our knowledge of child development. Parents of children that may have developmental delays should speak to the individual sport managers about the situation.

What should I do if it rains and the class is scheduled outside?
Please call the YSE Sports Department Weather Hotline at 212.369.8890 ext. 2372, 90 minutes prior to the scheduled class time to find out if your class has been cancelled due to inclement weather. An on-site staff member will continually monitor the weather conditions and make a determination if the field conditions are appropriate to continue with the class.

What happens if a class is cancelled due to inclement weather?
Asphalt Green will make every effort to be open in inclement weather. We reserve the right to cancel classes due to inclement weather and no make-ups, credits, or refunds will be granted.
If NYC Public Schools are closed or allow for early dismissal due to inclement weather, program classes will be cancelled and no make-up classes, credits, or refunds will be granted. Asphalt Green reserves the right to cancel program classes due to inclement weather during days public schools are not in session.

How do you manage outdoor classes during the winter when the weather is more unpredictable?
Winter term outdoor sports classes are subject to cancellation should Asphalt Green deem conditions inappropriate due to weather conditions. Make-up classes are not guaranteed and no refunds will be granted. However, a credit will be issued upon request for the third or more cancelled classes due to inclement weather of the term.

What is the makeup policy?
Classes meet on specific days and times. Attendance to scheduled classes is the responsibility of the participant. Refunds, make-up classes or attendance to a different class will not be offered when the absence has been the sole responsibility of the participant.
In the case that Asphalt Green cancels a class due to an unforeseen, uncontrollable circumstance, we will make every effort to provide a make-up class. In the event a make-up cannot be offered, a credit will be issued upon request.

What is the refund policy for classes?
All refund requests must be submitted in writing to the Registration Office. Refunds are computed from the date received (not postmarked).

The program refund schedule is as follows:
  • 100% refund: written request must be received 1 week prior to the first scheduled class.
  • 75% refund or credit: written request must be received 2 days prior to the second scheduled class.

NO REFUNDS OR CREDITS will be granted after the second scheduled class session. Pro-rated fees are not available for late registration. All Asphalt Green programs are subject to change or cancellation. Asphalt Green is not responsible for providing make-ups, credits, or issuing refunds for programs missed as a result of illness, emergencies or other events beyond the control of Asphalt Green. Please allow four to six weeks from receipt for processing a refund request. The handling charge for all requested refunds is $15. Registration handling fees are not refundable. For some programs, such as year-long programs and camps, there may be exceptions which will supersede the above policy.
NO REFUNDS will be granted for private lessons; only class credits.

I have been in this class for the past two semesters and now it is closed. Is there any way that I can be enrolled in this class?

Registration is done on a first come first served basis. In an effort to reward our returning class participants we offer a priority registration period for a week before the class is open to others to register. It is important for class structure and our policies to keep class numbers set at a certain level. You can place your name on the waitlist and will be enrolled in the class if a space opens up.

Can I sign up for a class once the term has started?
Yes, we're more than happy to accommodate your child if there is space in the requested class. In order to sign up for a class after the registration period has closed, please call 212-369-8890 ext. 2321. Please be advised that we do not offer a pro-rated tuition fee.

If I am put on a waiting list should I show up for the class?

No. Being on a waiting list does not mean that you are registered into the class. If someone drops out of the class you will be contacted to complete the registration process.

What clothing should my child wear for class?
Clothing varies depending on the sport being played in the class. Participants should be dressed to move with appropriate sport-specific footwear. If the class being offered is scheduled outdoors, please wear climate appropriate clothing.

Do you allow spectators in the classes?
It depends on the location of the class. Naturally, classes on the FieldTurf field are suitable for spectator viewing, as well as most classes in the Main Gym. Classes that take place in the East Room and Mini Gym are able to be viewed from the 3rd floor balcony. For these classes, please abide by the posted rules involving no food, excessive noise and communication with the participants, as safety is a major concern. Should posted rules not be followed, Asphalt Green staff reserve the right to ask spectators to wait in the lobby. Unfortunately, Mazur Hall and the 3rd floor studio spaces are not very suitable for spectator viewing. A decision to allow viewing from with the 3rd floor studio and Mazur Hall are made at the discretion of the instructor as these areas have limited seating.

Does Asphalt Green offer competitive travel teams?
Yes, we're proud to offer competitive teams in soccer, gymnastics, basketball and baseball. Please call the corresponding contact below to learn more about how you can become a member of a team and when tryouts are held.

Do you rent out your field or any parts of your facility?
Yes we do. For availability and pricing, please email sportsadmin@asphaltgreen.org or call our facility scheduler at 212-369-8890 ext. 2321
