Swim School – Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best way to contact the swim school?

Due to the large volume of calls received by Asphalt Green, we ask that you email us here. This allows for a quick and factual response to your inquiry.

Will classes be canceled due to snow or inclement weather?

Classes can be canceled due to snow or inclement weather, if you think classes may be canceled, please call 646-981-2372 (Weather Hotline) to check before leaving home.

How do I know when I do not have class?

We have posted "No Class Dates" in the catalog, on the back of program class cards, on our website, as well as on signs throughout the Aqua Center. These dates coincide with major events such as holidays, swim meets,or The BIG SWIM® at Asphalt Green. All members and program users are invited to watch swim meets and to participate in our annual Big Swim. If you suspect your class has been cancelled you can find out by calling the AquaCenter at 212.369.8890 and speaking to a customer service representative.

Does AG offer trial classes before enrolling in a class?

We do not offer the option of trying our classes before enrolling, but we do invite parents to watch classes they are thinking of enrolling their children in, and we are too happy to answer any questions you might have about a class. Please feel free to come in and chat with our Swim School Principal or Weekend Swim School Supervisor.

My child is advanced. How do I get them enrolled in an advanced class?

If you have not previously attended Swim School at Asphalt Green, please have us evaluate your child so that we can properly place him or her in the right class.

My child is too young or too old for a particular class, can they still attend?

All of the Asphalt Green swim school classes are broken down into age ranges that allow for appropriate social interaction as well as an optimum learning environment. We have a level for all ages and will find the right fit for you.

Can I get a make-up class if my child is sick?

Yes. Simply e-mail us at swimschool@asphaltgreen.org. Please let us know your child's full name, age, and class that was missed. We will reply with days and times available for you to make up the class. If you need to speak with someone directly call us at ext. 2082. We limit make-up classes to once per term.

Can I transfer from one class to another or from swim school to private lessons?

Yes. However in order to make sure that all of our swimmers get the most of the programs, transfers must be completed within the first two weeks of the term. We often have families on waiting lists and if a spot opens up we want to offer that spot to a new swimmer as soon as possible. Please contact our Swim School (ext. 2082) to handle these requests. All transfers requests must be made in writing to our registration department. Private lessons will not begin until all transfers are complete.

When can I start private lessons?

Continuing private lesson students may start at the beginning of the term, while those new to private lessons will be scheduled 2-3 weeks into the term.

If I register online, how do I get my class card?

You can pick up your class card at the membership office on the second floor of the AquaCenter.

What if the class I want is already full?

You have three options:

  • You can enroll in the same class at a different time.
  • You can go on the waiting list in case someone else cancels or drops out.
  • You can sign up for private lessons.
If I am put on a waiting list should I show up for the class?

No. Being on a waiting list does not mean that you are registered in the class. You may register if a student should drop out. We will contact you after the second week of classes to either offer you a place in that class or to suggest another class time that is available.

If my child is under 18 months, can I register without a Doctor's note?

You can register your child now, but you will not be permitted into class until a doctor’s note is provided and on file with registration.

Can the Aquatics Director or the Swim School Principal get me into a class that is already closed?

No. The policy is a first come, first served policy and in order to keep classes at an optimum size we cannot crowd classes with late registrations.

What is your refund policy?

All refund requests must be submitted in writing to the Registration Office. Refunds are computed from the date received (not post marked).

The program refund schedule is as follows:

  • 100% refund: written request must be received 1 week prior to the first scheduled class.
  • 75% refund: written request must be received 2 days prior to the second scheduled class.

The handling charge for all requested refunds is $15. Please allow four to six weeks from receipt for processing a refund request. Registration handling fees are not refundable. For some programs, such as year-long programs and camps, there may be exceptions which will supersede the above policy.
