Summer Day Camp FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

When does registration for Summer 2011 begin?

Priority registration for returning campers begins on December 1, 2010.
Open registration for new campers begins on January 3, 2011.
A completed application is necessary for registration. Applications can be sent by mail to:

Applications can be faxed to: 212.369.2630. They can also be dropped off in person at the Camp Office, located in the Murphy Center at 555 East 90th Street.

Applications will be available in early December in the Camp Office. You may also download an application in December from our Web site, www.asphaltgreen.org/camp.

What sessions do you offer for Summer 2011?

Our Summer 2011 camp sessions are as follows:

  • Session A: June 29 – August 19, 2011
  • Session B: June 29 – August 5, 2011
  • Session C: July 11 – August 19, 2011
  • Session D: June 29 – July 22, 2011
  • Session E: July 25 – August 19, 2011

What are the ages of Asphalt Green Summer Day Camp campers?

Campers are 4-13 years old. We also have a Counselor-in-Training Program for teenagers 14-15 years old. Our youngest campers must be four by December 31, 2010.

What are the different divisions?
  • Pee-Wee Division: Children entering Kindergarten and 1st Grade in Sept. 2011
  • Junior Division: Children entering Grades 2-3 in Sept. 2011
  • Senior Division: Children entering Grades 4-7 in Sept. 2011
  • Counselor-in-Training Program: Teenagers entering Grades 8-10 in Sept. 2011
What are the hours of camp?

Camp hours are 8:30am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday.

Does Asphalt Green offer pre- and after-camp services?

We offer both pre-camp service and after-camp service for Summer Day Camp. Pre-camp begins at 7:30am and after-camp runs until 6:30pm each day. The fee for pre- and after-camp is $15 per hour. Please note that after-camp is charged by hour, not by half-hour.

Is financial aid available for Summer Day Camp?

Yes, financial aid is available for Summer Day Camp each year. If you are interested in applying for financial aid, please submit a camp application with the $30 financial aid application fee. A financial aid packet will be sent to you. Please be aware that the deadline to submit a financial aid application is February 28, 2011. Applications received after this date will not be eligible for review.

Is bus service available?

Round-trip and one-way point-to-point bus service is available throughout Manhattan for an additional fee.

How are campers grouped at Summer Day Camp?

Campers are grouped according to what grade they have just completed in school.

Can I request that my child be in the same group as his/her friend?

We do our best to honor at least one campmate request per camper.

What is a typical day like?

Campers follow a schedule of activities throughout the day. Each period is approximately one hour long. Activities include:

  • Basketball
  • Soccer
  • Baseball and softball
  • Gymnastics
  • Martial Arts
  • Storytime and music
  • Yoga
  • Arts & Crafts
  • Swim Instruction
Where do the campers go on trip day?

Camp groups take a field trip once a week to places in the area. Last summer’s trips included the Bronx Zoo, Liberty Science Center, Armory Track & Field Center, Staten Island Yankees Game, Sportime USA, and Victorian Gardens. Campers are given an Asphalt Green Summer Day Camp tee-shirt that they must wear on trip day. They arrive back at camp in time for afternoon snack and dismissal.

Is lunch provided?

Lunch is provided for campers everyday except for trip day. We offer child-friendly lunches such as chicken tenders, pasta, sandwiches, hot dogs, macaroni & cheese, and pizza. Bagels and a salad bar are available daily as an alternative to the main meal. We also provide snack twice a day. Please be aware that campers must bring their own nut-free lunch on trip day.

What should my camper bring each day to Summer Day Camp?
  • Bathing suit
  • Towel
  • Bathing cap for children with hair that is chin-length or longer
  • Goggles
  • Water bottle
  • Sunscreen
  • Extra change of clothes (for Teddy groups)
  • Nut-free lunch (trip day only!)
  • Please make sure that all items sent to camp are clearly labeled with your child’s name and group.
