Adopt-A-Camper
Summer Day Camp Scholarship Fund
Each year, 600 campers run and play during our Summer Day Camp. With your help, so many more children can join them through our Summer Day Camp Scholarship Fund. Please donate to Adopt-A-Camper and give a needy NYC child a wonderful summer at Asphalt Green.
Since we started our camp 20 years ago, we have given scholarships to deserving city children who simply could not afford to attend camp. This year we received more applications than ever, each telling a story of genuine need:
Leah, a single mother, will be away for eight months in the military reserve. Her 10-year-old son Marty will be staying at his grandmother’s house, but she works during the day. Marty will be alone.
Marcus and his three children have had to rely on food stamps since he lost his job. A recent disability brings him pain and confines him to bed. He says of his children: “I would love for them to enjoy their summer even if I can’t enjoy it with them.”
Our goal is to grant as many scholarships as possible to children who would otherwise spend those long, hot summer days at home. We have seen the valuable impact of a scholarship on everyone at camp. The recipients get a memorable, rewarding summer of fun and friendships. The camp benefits from the diversity, enabling children from different backgrounds to laugh and play together. Parents know that their children are having an enjoyable summer of activity in a safe environment.
Together, we can make this a positive summer for more children. Your contribution of any size will help ADOPT-A-CAMPER for a day, week, month or summer at camp.

Adopt-A-Camper Coin Drive
We want to thank all our campers, camp parents, staff, and the Asphalt Green community for supporting our first Adopt-A-Camper Coin Drive. From July 12-16, our campers collected $9,591.09 in coins, dollars, and checks for our Summer Day Camp Scholarship Fund. This impressive amount was matched by an anonymous donor for a grand total of $19,182.18.
Campers really got in the spirit—one camper held a lemonade stand and donated her earnings; another raided his piggy bank. Campers constantly asked “how many kids can come to camp now?” We are thrilled to announce that five more children will join our Summer 2011 camp on scholarships.
We are proud of all of our camp groups as each one generated an astonishing amount. Our winners, Gummy 3 who collected $715.83, earned a party at Last Licks Ice Cream. As a special prize, the camp groups that collected the most for their division (Teddy 9, Gummy 9, Panda 2, Koala 1, and Blue Jays) won a swim party with Camp Director Mike Bailey. All of our campers received a coupon for a free sundae at Last Licks Ice Cream for getting involved.
A special thank you to Last Licks on 93rd and 2nd for all their support.
