Training Levels
Training levels (Beginner, Experienced, and Competitive) will be determined with coaches’ assistance during the initial clinic meeting and may be adjusted to suit the needs of the runner as the program progresses.
Definitions
This training plan is specifically designed for the Grand Rapids Marathon. This training plan is designed for adult athletes. Those under the age of 21 should consult their parents and school coach before starting a marathon training plan. There are three levels of athletes that can use this training plan:
- Beginning Runner
A beginning runner is new to running. A beginning runner is a runner that has been training and running road races for less than three years. The NYC Marathon will be your first marathon. This may also be the first time you have attempted to run a race of any distance. If you have not run any races, you must enter a few shorter road races running the second have of the Base Building Phase, the Strength Building Phase and the Speed Building Phase. Use these races to learn about and adjust to the racing environment and to competition.
Note that runners that have been running longer than three years and running races other than the marathon may attempt the training plan for a higher level.
A good goal for a beginning runner would be to finish the marathon. Setting time goals is not wise.
- Experienced Runner
An experienced runner has been training and running road races between 3 and 5 years. An Experienced runner may not have run a marathon before. If this is your first marathon, setting a goal of finishing is still a wise decision. If you have more than 3 years experience running road races and have run 1 to 3 marathons, you may want to set a time goal. If you have run more than 3 marathons, you can definitely set a time goal.
- Competitive Runner
A competitive runner has been training and racing for more than five years and have finished more than 3 marathons, setting time goals in shorter races or even in marathons. A competitive runner may want to set a place goal – finishing in the top 20% of your age group.
