In urban areas throughout the country, girls' participation in team sports drops significantly during the middle school years. Programs for this age group are scarce and tend to focus on those on track to become serious athletes. However, most preteen girls haven't had the opportunity to develop skills necessary to participate in such programs. Asphalt Green's Girls Basketball League provides the instruction, support, and encouragement necessary to successfully engage pre-adolescent girls in organized sports.

Started in 2010, the League has already yielded great benefits. Players have developed regular exercise routines and have gained skills both on and off the court. For many girls, the League has even sparked a new interest in pursuing high school athletics. They now understand what it means to be a student athlete and are taking their schoolwork more seriously. This year, Asphalt Green will provide the wonderful experience of team sports to over 100 girls from our 8 partnering schools.

To find out how your school can participate, contact David Ludwig, Director of Community Programs, at 646-981-2243 or Dludwig@asphaltgreen.org.
