Swimmers range in ability and fitness level. Please abide by the following guidelines to ensure workout sessions remain safe and fun. Always be aware of your surroundings, and respect the space of fellow swimmers.

  • Lane Speed Please observe and select a lane with swimmers of similar abilities and speed.
  • Warm-up Circle swimming is required during warm-up sets. Please keep to the right side of the lane.
  • Entering a Lane Communicate with other swimmers before entering a lane. Please do not dive, jump, or push off into oncoming swimmers. If you arrive in the middle of a set, wait until the beginning of the next set to enter the lane.
  • Late Arrivals If you are late and the lanes are full, join the workout at its current point, rather than from the beginning. Please respect your teammates and coaches by following the workout. If you want to warm up, you may use any empty lanes to do so on your own. If a person in your lane appears unsure of the rules, please take the time to explain politely.
  • Swimming Pattern If there are two or more members in a lane, you must swim in a circular pattern, keeping to the right side of the lane.
  • Workout Sets Please respect your teammates and coaches and follow the workout. Keep with the group as best as you can, even if it means swimming a little less distance.
  • Speed Slower swimmers must yield to faster swimmers. At the beginning of each set, determine the order of speed among people in your lane, and leave the wall in that order. Please remember that speed varies when you use equipment (paddles, fins, drag devices), and change the order within your lane to accommodate adjustments throughout the workout.
  • Passing Mid-Lane Pass on the left. Alert the swimmer you are passing by tapping his or her foot, so he or she knows to give you room. Judge your speed, and use common sense. If you are passing mid lane, you need to have enough room to pass before coming to a wall.
  • Passing During Flip Turns Alert the swimmer you are passing by tapping his or her foot, so he or she knows to give you room. When both swimmers approach the wall, the faster member will complete a flip turn on the left side of the lane while the slower athlete will flip turn on the right side of the lane. This will give the faster swimmer room to pass. If you are uncomfortable being passed on the flip turn, it is best to stop at the wall to allow the faster swimmer to pass you.
  • Stopping If you need to stop, do so at the wall to the right of oncoming swimmers, so they will have sufficient room to turn. Always be aware your surroundings, and respect the space of fellow swimmer.
