Waterproofing is Asphalt Green’s free swim instruction and water safety program for New York City public school students. We believe that swimming is an essential skill that every child should learn.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related deaths for children ages 1 to 14 years old. In addition to being a matter of safety, swimming also provides children with an enjoyable physical activity. With childhood obesity reaching an epidemic level, our Waterproofing program is one way to encourage a healthy lifestyle habit for New York City children.

In the 2017-2018 school year, we will teach 2,600 children from 47 schools throughout New York City how to swim. Waterproofing runs for approximately 35 weeks from late September through early June with weekly lessons for participating classes.

Through various partnerships, we are able to offer Waterproofing at five pools in Manhattan and the Bronx. Waterproofing takes place at Asphalt Green’s Upper East Side and Battery Park City campuses. In addition, we teach our program at P.S. 125, Children’s Aid Society Dunlevy Milbank Center, and New Settlement Community Campus.
