For the first time ever, Big Swim Big Kick evolved into Big Week! As part of the celebration of Asphalt Green’s 50th anniversary, we hosted seven days of events for all different parts of our community to encourage all New Yorkers to get moving! The week culminated in our signature events, Big Kick and Big Swim, which were free and open to the public.

Read on for a recap of the week’s events, and be sure to check out the videos of our community in action!

Sunday, April 23 – Day of Community Service

We kicked off Big Week with a Day of Community Service – our first-ever community cleanup! We want to extend a huge thank you to the 40 amazing volunteers for making the event a success! Together, we walked over a mile around our Upper East Side neighborhood and collected over 104 pounds of litter!

Monday, April 24 – Member Appreciation Day

We chose Monday to show appreciation to our members! Without them, we wouldn’t be able to do everything we do. We decorated our campuses in style with over 1,000 balloons. We also offered a sweepstakes with glamorous prizes including Lululemon gifts cards, free personal training, and a free month of membership with over 370 entrants, as well as free recovery massages for our members who hit the gym, swam laps, or participated in group exercise classes.

Tuesday, April 25 – Teamwork Challenge

From March 13 through April 6, we invited 40 NYC public schools to participate in our Teamwork Challenge. They filmed their students playing a fun, teamwork-based game from our Recess Enhancement Program and uploaded them to social media. On Tuesday, we announced the winner! P.S. 527 M won the challenge with a score of 95, beating out P.S. 174 Q – their closest challenger – with 75 points. We also want to thank all the schools who competed. Your dedication, sportsmanship, and teamwork skills were impressive and inspiring.

Wednesday, April 26 – This Is How We Move

We challenged New Yorkers from the areas around our two campuses to show off how they move! Our teams scoured the neighborhoods on the Upper East Side and in Battery Park city to find people willing to show their skills on camera. Our neighbors didn’t disappoint, and we shared the video on our social media channels to encourage all New Yorkers to get moving.

Thursday, April 27 – Recess Enhancement Program Field Day

Thursday, kids from four public schools enjoyed a field day on Litwin Field! They got active and had a blast playing a variety of different games that we offer through REP. Plus, for the first time ever, we introduced activities with fun inflatables where kids practiced their sports skills, ran a fun obstacle course, and tested their throwing accuracy.

A special shout out to Central Park East, P.S. 38, P.S. 194, and P.S. 539X, and a huge thank you to the REP coaches, staff, and volunteers that made the day possible!

Friday, April 28 – Big Kick

A little rain didn’t stop kids from streaming onto Litwin Field for an evening of soccer festival fun at Big Kick! Children tested their skills with soccer darts, soccer pool, soccer tennis, one-on-one games, and more. The evening culminated with the Dynamic Freestyle Soccer Crew putting on an exhibition of their amazing juggling skills.

Saturday, April 29 – Big Swim

Kids jumped into the pool and swam to the finish in the 25-yard race. Some of the young athletes who took part in the race learned to swim through our free Waterproofing program. It was a true celebration of sports and fitness, and each child went home with a swim cap and a medal, and they all got an ice pop to enjoy after their race.
