Lifeguard shortages have led to beach access restrictions and pool closures throughout New York City. By earning your American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification at Asphalt Green, you can help keep our beaches and pools open and save lives. Our training will prepare you to respond to aquatic emergencies and ensure the safety of others.

Earn your American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification at Asphalt Green. This comprehensive course provides you with the critical skills needed to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies. You’ll learn how to manage breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until professional help arrives. 

The course includes First Aid, CPR, and AED training, with a minimum of 28 hours of instruction both in and out of the water. Attendance at all classes is mandatory. Upon successful completion, you’ll receive a two-year certification in Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers.

If you’d like to learn more about our American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification course, read on for more information.

To participate, candidates must pass the following American Red Cross prerequisites:

Tread water for 2 minutes using only your legs.

Swim 300 yards continuously using either freestyle or breaststroke.

Complete a timed 20-yard swim, retrieve a 10-pound brick from at least 7 feet deep, and return it to the surface.

Throughout the course, participants will be assessed on the following:

Lifeguarding skills, water rescues, CPR, AED, and First Aid.

Scenario-based skills assessments, including:

Surveillance rotation

Timed Single-Rescuer CPR

Multiple Rescuer Response Scenario

Final written exam with 50 questions, requiring a minimum score of 80%.

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a two-year certification in Lifeguarding, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers, and First Aid.

Yes, we offer guidance on finding local lifeguard positions, and many participants secure lifeguard jobs at Asphalt Green or nearby facilities.
