The Big Swim Attendees Want the Mayor to Move the Ramp

May 1, 2015

It was all smiles at Asphalt Green on April 25. Our 20th annual The Big Swim was a huge success, drawing children ages 6 to 12 from the New York City area to participate in our free swim meet.

Among the cheering fans, excited swimmers, and performances from Olympic athletes, the community was vocal about the city’s plans to put a garbage truck ramp between two playgrounds at East 91st St., potentially putting 400,000 children in harm’s way.

We were also thrilled that New York State Assembly member Rebecca Seawright, New York State Sen. Liz Krueger, and Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer all came out to support these incredible young athletes and our community.

Mayor Bill de Blasio is considering a smart alternative to move the ramp just one block, which would keep children safe while they play. Dozens of children and parents showed their support of the alternative by taking pictures asking Mayor de Blasio to be their hero by moving the ramp just one block.

Join the movement to keep our children safe by taking your own selfie. Hold up a sign that tells the mayor why moving the ramp makes him a hero, then share it with your friends on Twitter using #MoveTheRamp
