Zumba Party Brings Community Together to Move the Ramp

May 22, 2015

Asphalt Green brought the party to City Hall’s lunch hour Thursday, May 21. An impressive 150 people, including an elected city official, demonstrated their best Zumba moves to show Mayor Bill de Blasio how important Asphalt Green is to the community. It was a great turnout in our effort to encourage the mayor to move the planned East 91st Street garbage truck ramp. The current course of action would put 400,000 children in harm’s way each year.

Instructor Hans Tondereau kept the beat going and inspired kids and adults alike to jump in on the fun. Even City Councilman Ben Kallos joined to show his support and move to the beat.

The crowd kept the energy high, and our message was heard. Shortly after the event, City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer announced his support to move the ramp, saying the plan is hazardous for thousands of families.

Additionally, 15 city council members announced their support by sending a letter to Mayor de Blasio urging him to move the ramp. The letter was signed by council members Margaret S. Chin, Costa Constantinides, Rafael Espinal, Daniel Garodnick, Vanessa Gibson, Corey Johnson, Ben Kallos, Stephen Levin, Mark Levine, Rosie Mendez, Ydanis Rodriguez, Debi Rose, Helen Rosenthal,  Ritchie Torres, and Mark Treyger.

A huge thank you goes to everyone who attended our Zumba party, Stringer, and the city council members who voiced their support!
