Charlie Downey
Charlie started playing water polo at 14 in Sherman Oaks, California, where he competed for Notre Dame High School’s varsity team for three seasons. As a senior, he captained the team and earned both the coaches’ award and team MVP honors. His water polo path also included competing for Supreme Water Polo Cub and Los Angeles Water Polo Club. Charlie’s athletic pursuits extended beyond water polo, as he also played varsity volleyball and served as secretary of the surf club.
After high school, Charlie continued his water polo career at Long Island University (LIU), competing at the NCAA Division 1 level. He made an immediate impact as a freshman in 2022, scoring the first goal in program history during his collegiate debut against Washington & Jefferson. Charlie’s contributions were crucial in LIU’s first official win, as he scored a team-high five goals against Penn State Behrend. A current Junior at LIU, Downey continues to compete for the University and excels in the classroom. He recently received his third consecutive Academic All-American award and is a part of the LIU Honors College.
With one year of coaching splash ball at Los Angeles Water Polo Club and two years’ coaching at Brooklyn Hustle Water Polo Club, the Los Angeles native is ready to bring his water polo expertise and experience to the next generation of athletes while coaching at Asphalt Green!
