Created by the experts behind our AGUA swim and and Inclusive programs, AGUA for Special Olympics NY combines Asphalt Green’s legacy of aquatics excellence and accessibility to provide a inclusive pathway to competitive swim.

We welcome athletes with intellectual disabilities to join our program. If you’re comfortable in the water and eager to compete, we want to hear from you!

What to Expect:

  • Team environment training proper mechanics, endurance and speed to support athletic development.
  • Weekly practices and competitive meets.
  • Mentorship and guidance from professional Asphalt Green swim coaches.
  • Competitive swim gear.
  • An inclusive environment.
  • Low coach-to-athlete ratio.

How To Join

We seek athletes with prior swim experience who are independent in the water and interested in competition.

  • Who can join: Swimmers ages 8 to 18 years
  • Prerequisites:
    • Must be able to tread water for 2 minutes
    • Must be able to swim 50 yards freestyle and 50 yards backstroke continuously
    • Recommended: Completion of a swim evaluation prior to registration. Please note that athletes not deemed ready for this program can be removed at the coach’s discretion to ensure athlete safety.

Commitment:

  • Athletes and their guardians must follow the AGUA for Special Olympics NY at River East Elementary School code of conduct.
  • Athletes must adhere to a minimum 75% attendance policy, with attendance data reviewed monthly.
  • Athletes and their guardians must complete required surveys throughout the term to help us track development and ensure continued support.
  • Athletes must be willing to register for at least one team-sanctioned swim meet per the coach’s discretion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Special Olympics New York provides inclusive opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities to discover competitive sports. We welcome athletes with a range of skill levels to try out, but previous experience in swimming and independence in the water is required.

Asphalt Green’s Inclusive Programs welcome swimmers of all ages, experience levels, and abilities. Options include our inclusive Everyone Swims class and Adaptive Private Swim lessons.

AGUA for Special Olympics NY follows Specials Olympics’ training guidelines, including a 4-1 athlete-to-coach ratio. We practice weekly on Saturdays and participate in competitive meets.
