Celebrating national youth sports week at asphalt green
At Asphalt Green, we know that great sports programs change lives. Participation in sports can reduce the risk of diabetes, obesity, anxiety, and depression while improving cognitive development, creativity, confidence, social skills, and more. Other studies show that youth athletes show greater academic achievement, are more likely to attend college, and earn leadership positions in the workplace. By every measure, sports improve kids’ physical and mental health, while instilling a lifelong passion for healthy and active lifestyles.
Despite their amazing benefits, only half of kids in the U.S. play sports, while the American Association of Pediatrics notes that 70% of kids drop out of sports all together by age 13. That’s why Asphalt Green is working to improve access to high-quality youth sports programs for kids of all ages, skill, levels, and abilities.
National Youth Sports Week is coming up on October 6-11, and to celebrate, we’re sharing why our NYC youth sports coaches believe kids should play sports, plus tips on how to keep kids in the game throughout their childhoods.

Sports give kids more than just physical skills. They build confidence, teamwork, resilience, and the ability to handle setbacks – qualities that serve them for life, on and off the field. They also create social connections and a sense of belonging, which are crucial for healthy development.
To keep kids coming back year after year, it’s important to create an environment where they feel supported and challenged, celebrating effort as much as achievement. Ensuring they’re having fun is key. The more positive their early experiences, the more likely they’ll stay involved.Juan Gatti, Associate Director of Soccer

Swimming teaches kids discipline, resilience, and confidence, but it all starts with strong fundamentals. When kids build that base early, they’re able to progress consistently as they get older — and that steady sense of growth is what keeps them engaged year after year

Sports are perfect for young people to learn life skills through activity and comradery. At all levels of sports, whether it’s recreationally, competitively or just in the playground, kids learn to adapt and learn life skills.
In a pickup basketball game, you learn to have your voice heard. During a team overnight AAU tournament, you learn about where your teammates are from and the different cultures in which each of us were raised. We can encourage our young people to stay active through sports by ensuring safe spaces to play for all.Chris Cassels, Director of Basketball Operations

Through sports, kids learn the reward of hard work, seeing that dedication to learning something, while challenging, can be enjoyable. Sports foster teamwork, leadership, and accountability in a way few other environments can. When we challenge kids but also find ways to make the process fun, they’re more likely to stay engaged. When they accomplish something on their own, it becomes a deeply rewarding experience that motivates them to keep going. It helps when kids know they can overcome obstacles.
