Get Girls in the Game for National Girls and Women in Sports Day

January 26, 2026
Three women in black "Flag Football Club" jerseys pose on a lit outdoor football field at night, with city buildings visible in the background. One holds a football.

A young person with short black hair smiles at the camera, wearing a gray t-shirt with a green basketball graphic, seated against a wooden background.

“I love basketball because I get to play with and against a lot of other people I normally wouldn’t meet outside of basketball. I really enjoy working together and being able to trust my teammates while we’re playing! Basketball with Asphalt Green has improved my skills and my confidence on and off the court.”

– Zoey, AG Basketball Athlete

For Zoey and so many others, we see how the right sports program can change an athlete’s life: Building confidence by overcoming obstacles, learning to persevere and collaborate through competition, and experiencing the joy of movement and big wins.

As we get ready to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day on February 4, we’re reminded of why we work to ensure everyone has access to sports.

Striving For Equal Access

In recent years, girls’ and women’s sports have grown tremendously. The Aspen Institute’s State of Play report shows that girls aged 6–12 (34%) and 13–17 (38%) “regularly played sports at higher levels in 2023 than any recent year back to at least 2012,” and in college, the NCAA reports a double-digit increase in women’s sports participation over the past decade.

Despite these achievements, there’s still so much work to do to ensure girls have equal access to sports. According to the Women’s Sports Foundation,  high school boys still get over 1 million more opportunities to play sports than girls each year, and 40% of teen girls do not participate in sports.

Today, financial barriers, stigma, lack of role models, and unequal quality of programs all contribute to the fact that so many girls still struggle to access the amazing health and social benefits of sports.

Support Asphalt Green’s Get Girls in the Game Campaign

Last year, we launched our annual Get Girls in the Game Campaign, raising thousands of dollars to support our subsidized Community Sports Leagues that break down barriers to play, including our first-ever girls-only Community Soccer League. In addition, we awarded $1.2 million in scholarships to athletes hoping to join Asphalt Green Sports.

Now, we’re hoping to get more girls in the game than ever before. Learn more about this year’s campaign below to find out how you can change a young athlete’s life.
