Jonathan Packles Breaks AGUA Record, Wins First National Title at Speedo Junior Nationals
Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics (AGUA) swimmer Jonathan Packles is officially a national champion. Competing against the nation’s best 18-and-under swimmers at the 2026 Speedo Junior Nationals in Irvine, California, Packles won the 200m backstroke final on Wednesday night, touching the wall in a personal best 1:59.54 — breaking the AGUA record and marking his first time ever swimming under two minutes in the event.
The win makes Packles the first Junior National Champion in AGUA Swim Team history since 2019. His time also ranks him as the fourth-fastest 18-and-under swimmer in the country this year in the 200m backstroke, and the 21st-fastest 17-year-old in USA Swimming history.
The victory comes just a week after Packles narrowly missed qualifying for his first international roster with Team USA — a disappointment he turned into motivation. Rather than let the near-miss weigh on him, Packles regrouped, refined his focus, and delivered the best swim of his career on one of the sport’s biggest stages for junior athletes.
Jonathan’s national title is the result of years of hard work, resilience, and trust in the process. He has developed tremendously as both a swimmer and a person during his time with AGUA, and seeing him break a team record and stand atop the podium is a special moment for our entire program. Packles has been part of the Asphalt Green since joining the AGUA’s elite competitive program at age 8 in 2017. Nearly a decade later, his path from beginner to national champion reflects the kind of long-term development the AGUA program is built around — patient coaching, steady progression, and a team environment that pushes athletes to reach their full potential.
