Recess is the perfect time for kids to burn off energy, practice good sportsmanship, and build confidence through playful challenges. Rock-Paper-Scissors Championship turns a quick hand game into a classroom-wide tournament, where every player who doesn’t win joins a cheering squad for the final showdown.

Who: Grades 3 to 5

Players: 10-30

Set-up: Students pair up

Time: 15+ minutes

Where: Classroom

Equipment: None

EXPLAIN

  1. Find a partner!
  2. When I say “GO”, you will play Rock-Paper-Scissors.
    • Rock beats Scissors
    • Scissors beats Paper
    • Paper beats Rock
  3. If you win, find another winner and play against them.
  4. If you don’t win, you become your partner’s cheering squad.
  5. Keep playing until there is a final round between 2 players and their cheering squads.

PLAY: REP IT OUT

EASY: Walk to the next player.

MEDIUM: Have students cheer with inside voices.

HARD: Play Rock-Paper-Scissors while running in place.

TIPS

GAME TIP: Have students repeat “Rock, Paper, Scissors, Say Show” before starting.

CONFLICT RESOLUTION TIP: Play multiple rounds to have more than one champion.

OUTDOOR TIP: Have students use Rock-Paper-Scissors to resolve any conflict at recess.
