From Recess to the Court: How Toddlers Basketball Builds Skills Through Play

March 27, 2026

What do games like tag, relay races, and “Hungry Wolf” have in common with building a passion for basketball? More than you might expect. For our youngest athletes, the path to a lifetime of joy on the court often starts with the gifts of play.

Across all Asphalt Green programs, you’ll find a shared belief that play transforms lives. In the pool, at recess, and on the court, we witness athletes of all ages and abilities learn and grow through structured movement. And like any team competing to be champions, our coaches work best when they learn from each other.

Asphalt Green Basketball’s Toddler Basketball program is a great example, combining key parts of our Recess Enhancement Program’s youth development curriculum with Asphalt Green Basketball’s athletic excellence.

For decades, REP has brought structured, play-based programming to schools across New York City, helping tens of thousands of students build teamwork, confidence, and problem-solving skills through games. On the court, AG Basketball introduces young New Yorkers to sports, providing a safe space for children as young as three years old to play and explore basketball.

AG Basketball and REP Coach Chris Collins brings the best of both programs to our Toddlers Basketball program, helping new athletes build foundational basketball skills like dribbling, passing, and shooting through structured play techniques from our REP program.

Hosting children ages 3-4 who are brand new to the game, Coach Chris focuses on helping athletes develop confidence, social skills, and a passion for being active. To see how this comes to life on the court, we spoke with Chris to learn how he blends REP’s play-based approach with early basketball development.

1. How Does REP Coaching Translate to Basketball?

Coaching through the REP model has allowed me to be more creative in my basketball coaching style, reshaping how I approach my drills. It has given me the ability to make a simple task fun and efficient for our young basketball players.

2. What Are Some REP Drills or Games You Run in Toddlers Basketball?

Some of my most popular games would be Hungry Wolf, Mountains and Valleys, Relay Tag and Grocery Store. These rep games can be played in different ways to incorporate specific basketball skills and at the same time keep the kids engaged and having fun.

3. In Basketball or in Recess, What’s Most Important for Kids to Learn at an Early Age?

The rules are most important for kids to learn at an early age. We want kids to play a safe and fair game. Learning through play ultimately helps kids gain understanding from their experiences and encourages them to keep trying regardless of results.

4. How Does REP and AG Basketball Inspire a Passion for Sports and Exercise?

Through community engagement, creative collaboration, and of course, fun! Asphalt Green is filled with professionals, trainers, and athletes who all have a passion for what we do. We offer basketball classes and leagues for various age groups, as well as multiple Boys and Girls travel teams. We host amazing community events like REP Field Day, Asphalt Screams, Big Swim, Sprinkler Day, and more. Through these programs and events, we inspire kids to learn, move, and grow with us.

5. What Do You Hope Young Athletes Take Away from REP and AG Basketball programming?

The most important thing is to be open and have fun with your experience. As a professional, our job is to give our students the opportunity, space, and tools they need to succeed.
